3D printed hollow form



 

This project requires me to collaborate and combine a shape I made
 with a shape my partner made so that we can create a new form 


                                                  these are all of the shapes I made while experimenting. I decided I wanted to use the spiral shape (it's really small in this screencapture)

this is my partners chosen object. Reminds me of a stump


 

We brainstormed a few ideas of how to combine our shapes by imagining narratives which our two combined shapes could combine to create

for example, we imagined a bridge between two stumps or a spiral stump combo with another stump upside down. However, we thought that wrapping the spiral around a tall stump shape (tree) would look like a worm or a waterslide attacking the top of the elongated stump.

As well, to make the object more interesting, and the evil spiral more threatening, we added a small tent village (under siege by the spiral worm waterslide shape). 

we had to create a whole new spiral to fit Loic's shape, and to do this I learned how to use the spiral command. We also had to warp the shape of Loic's object to accommodate the tent village, which we made using extruded triangles for the tents and extruded circles for a very small firepit. 

This design incorporates the less organic and more irregular stump-looking object with my very clean and predictable spiral object to create a narrative within one single object. If given more time, we discussed how we would like to paint it and weather the object to make it look like a dangerous rock.








This is our final object and it is very cartoonishly evil and threatening in black. 

If I were to do this project again I would find a way to make the spiral rise above the tents more aggressively. However, that would mean that the structure is not self-supporting because the top of the spiral would be floating in space. We would need to make a really skinny armature which could be clipped off after the print process if we were to make that happen. 






 a.)  Function - how does this object function?  Is is successful in doing so?

        b.)  Form - what are the aesthetic qualities of this object?

        c.)  Self-supporting - is this object self-supporting?  Will it print without support material?

        d.)  3D Printability - Is this 3D model water tight and ready to print?  What is its likelihood for success in printing?


2.)  Brainstorm with your partner on how you might design a hybrid of two of your designs (one of your and one of your partner's).


3.)  Sketch (on paper!) at least FIVE concepts of what this design might look like


4.)  Collaborate on the design of a 3D model that demonstrates hybridity of the two selected concepts.  While it is possible to combine 3D models in the various software platforms we've explored, it might be necessary to rebuild - from scratch - the final hybrid object.


5.) Final object must fit within a 4 inch (x) by 4 inch (y) by 6 inch (z) box 


6.)  Simulate the 3D print your final design in PrusaSlic3r software.
